Frequently asked questions

Is Ballistol Gunex a barrel cleaner or a gun oil?

Gunex is primarily a gun oil that combines cleaning, lubricating and corrosion-protection functions. It can be used for routine barrel cleaning, but it is not solely a chemical barrel-cleaning solution.

Does Gunex remove copper and tombac fouling?

Gunex helps remove powder and tombac residues and is suitable for routine post-shooting maintenance. A dedicated barrel cleaner such as Ballistol Robla Solo MIL will normally work faster on severe copper or tombac fouling.

Is it suitable for long-term firearm storage?

Yes. Gunex is designed for the long-term preservation of exposed metal surfaces. It displaces moisture, penetrates narrow gaps and leaves a corrosion-resistant film. Wipe away excess oil before placing the firearm into storage.

Can Gunex be used in very cold conditions?

Yes. This version has a specified operating range of –50 to +100 °C. Apply it sparingly in cold conditions because excessive lubricant may collect carbon, dust and other contaminants.

How does Gunex differ from Ballistol Universal Oil?

Gunex concentrates on metal lubrication and long-term corrosion protection in demanding conditions. Ballistol Universal Oil is an alkaline multi-purpose oil that can also be used on natural wood and smooth leather. Gunex is the more focused option when firearm metalwork is the main priority.

Can Gunex be applied to a wooden stock or optical surfaces?

Gunex is intended mainly for metal parts. Ballistol Universal Oil or a dedicated stock oil is more suitable for natural wood. Prevent the spray from reaching optical surfaces, ammunition, rubber parts and unfamiliar surface coatings.

How should Gunex be used for barrel cleaning?

Confirm that the firearm is unloaded and remove ammunition from the working area. Apply a small quantity to a cleaning patch, brush or felt pellet and pass it through the barrel. Allow the oil to loosen fouling, clean with a suitable brush and finish with clean patches. Pass a dry patch through the barrel before firing.

What safety precautions are required?

The aerosol is extremely flammable. Use it with adequate ventilation and keep it away from flames, sparks and hot surfaces. Do not pierce or burn the container, even when empty. Protect it from sunlight and temperatures above 50 °C, and prevent the product from entering waterways or the environment.

When is Ballistol Gunex 50 ml the right choice?

This product is well suited to users who need a compact oil for cleaning, lubricating and preserving firearm metalwork. Its moisture-displacing properties are particularly useful for hunting firearms exposed to rain, snow, coastal air or substantial changes in temperature.

Ballistol Universal Oil may be more practical when the wooden stock and leather sling also require treatment. A heavily copper-fouled barrel needs a dedicated copper solvent, while highly loaded sliding surfaces may benefit from a heavier gun grease. Gunex is best suited to general metal maintenance and long-term corrosion protection.

Expert recommendation

Before maintenance, confirm that the firearm is completely unloaded and remove all ammunition from the working area. Apply Gunex in a controlled quantity to a cloth, brush or cleaning patch. There is no need to saturate the action: a thin film reduces friction and protects metal without attracting as much dust, carbon and other debris.

After cleaning the barrel, remove loosened fouling with clean patches. A very thin protective film may be left inside the bore during long-term storage, but it must be removed with a dry patch before firing. Remove excess oil from the chamber and prevent it from contaminating ammunition, optical surfaces and wooden components. If the firearm has been exposed to rain or saltwater spray, dry it first and then treat the metalwork with Gunex. Use the aerosol only with good ventilation and away from ignition sources.

Long-term protection for firearm metalwork

Ballistol Gunex 50 ml spray helps clean firearm metalwork, maintain smooth mechanical operation and protect surfaces from moisture and corrosion. Its compact size makes it convenient for both home maintenance and carrying on hunting or range trips.
